3 CATCHING DRILLS USING SOFT GRIP WEIGHTED BALLS
3 CATCHING DRILLS
USING SOFT GRIP WEIGHTED BALLS
Try these 3 drills we use with our catchers to improve receiving and transfer technique.
Drill #1 - Overload Receiving Drill
Using a 15 oz, 21 oz, or 32 oz ball (depending on age/skill/strength) and have a partner toss you the ball. Focus on catching the ball “toward the zone” in order to better control the momentum of the heavier ball. (Simulates the force of a baseball thrown at high velocity.)
Drill #2 - Overload Receiving Progression
Have a partner toss you in order from heavier weight, down to baseball weight. Again, focus on controlling the momentum of the ball. You will notice how using proper momentum will cause the lighter weight to be moved much easier.
Drill #3 - Overload Reverse Transfer Drill
Here, your partner will only toss you a baseball. You’ll begin with an overload ball in your glove hand when your partner tosses the baseball, you will quickly transfer the ball to your throwing hand and get your arm cocked while catching the baseball that was tossed.
